Lately, much has been written about Elias Gottstein and Carl Luis Zielke. Unplugged: Leben Guaia Guaia, a documentary on the lives of two homeless street musicians who cycle from city to city, premiered back in 2012. Since its release, this award-winning film – already tipped to be Germany’s best documentary – has wowed select movie theaters and slowly spilled from its primary realm, music, into cross-cultural and intellectual papers, magazines, and other media in the guise of reviews and some ambitiously complex reporting. Some of these critics even called the film’s protagonists “high-end bums,” leaving us a little bewildered by the media’s unanimous endorsement of this lifestyle of “musical homelessness.” The duo in question, Guaia Guaia, pursue a different tack, however: Elias and Luis unceremoniously flip the bird to society and all of its structures. In terms of music and social orthodoxy. An attitude that, somehow, meets with the approval of conformist citizens (and journalists).
