Lately, much has been written about Elias Gottstein and Carl Luis Zielke. Unplugged: Leben Guaia Guaia, a documentary on the lives of two homeless street musicians who cycle from city to city, premiered back in 2012. Since its release, this award-winning film – already tipped to be Germany’s best documentary – has wowed select movie theaters and slowly spilled from its primary realm, music, into cross-cultural and intellectual papers, magazines, and other media in the guise of reviews and some ambitiously complex reporting. Some of these critics even called the film’s protagonists “high-end bums,” leaving us a little bewildered by the media’s unanimous endorsement of this lifestyle of “musical homelessness.” The duo in question, Guaia Guaia, pursue a different tack, however: Elias and Luis unceremoniously flip the bird to society and all of its structures.
